Penance is framed by the words "Healing" and "Reconciliation."
It is God's initiative to forgive, releasing people from their sins. Penance is a sacrament of healing and conversion, allowing progression in life, a reunion of the community of believers growing in relationship with God, and moving from a state of sin to a state of grace together.
Reconciliation Involves the Penitent in:
Penance - take action and seek forgiveness
Confession - tell their sins
Conversion - have desire for ongoing change
Penance is a conversation where preparation is required. To provide you guidance through this process, please see "The Sacrament of Penance" in the Documents section.
At St. Joseph Catholic Community, the Communal Penance Service takes place during the Easter and Christmas seasons and lasts about an hour. After a time of prayer, song and examination of conscience, each person has an opportunity to write what they are sorry for on a piece of paper. Priests are available for each of us come up, present our paper and receive individual absolution. It is a prayerful experience, and all are welcome.
Individual reconciliation is also available weekly and by appointment with the pastor.
