Message to Confirmation Preparation Candidates
Welcome to the Confirmation Program!
This is year is an opportunity to grow in prayer, faith, and community,
and to ask yourself, “Am I ready to take ownership of my Catholic Faith?”
Faith is a gift from God, but one must choose to accept it on their own.
At Baptism, our parents and godparents lovingly accepted that faith for
us. Confirmation is the opportunity
to accept it on your own and be empowered by the Holy Spirit to live it out.
I thank you for being open to this process and for
giving this year all you’ve got! You
have the support of your immediate family and the families of the Church of St. Joseph.
As your High School Youth Minister, you have my complete support as well!

Confirmation Preparation Overview
The Parish invites all teens in grades 10-12 to reflect on their readiness to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation. For those teens who become candidates, the experience will be challenging and incredibly rewarding.
Confirmation candidates for Confirmation are expected to commit themselves to the preparation through the entire year,
missing no more than two meetings, accomplishing two service projects, attending
the Confirmation Retreat and doing a final interview. If you're interested in getting more information on Confirmation Preparation at St. Joseph's please contact the High School Youth Minister,
Phil Arellano.
Aspects of Confirmation Preparation
Community Building
This preparation will offer opportunities
to build community throughout the year, the first opportunity being the LIFELINE Mass. Candidates should plan on attending the weekly 6:00 p.m. Mass as it gives candidates a strong sense of what it means to be a
young person active and alive in the Church. Other
Communal aspects include:
- Weekly Small Group Sessions occur Sunday evenings 7:15-8:45 p.m.
(All candidates meet first in the High Hall at 7:00pm for a Large Group Ice
Breaker.) Within small groups, candidates will have the opportunity to gather with others their own age, to discuss what is happening in daily lives, to share faith, to pray, and to
grow in their understanding of our Catholic Christian faith.
- Retreat experiences have
proven to be a successful way of building community while deepening faith. There
is one mandatory Confirmation Retreat. There is no replacement for this retreat
weekend. Candidates are invited to attend the other two retreats offered for
all teenagers. There is no replacement for this retreat weekend:
-- Confirmation Retreat - (Sat/Sun) April 17/18 at
Camp Friendship
Candidates are invited to attend the other two retreats
offered for all High School Youth:
-- Fall Retreat - (Sat/Sun) Sept. 19/20 with the NET Team
-- Winter Retreat - (Sat/Sun) March 13/14
Service
Each candidate is expected to do two service projects with
a one page reflection on each. One service project will be a large group
effort with Feed My Starving Children (FMSC). The other service project
will be up to you. It must be done with your sponsor or a parent and must
include at least 3 service hours.
Mon., Nov.
9th Feed My Starving Children Confirmation Opportunity #1
Mon., Feb. 22 Feed
My Starving Children Confirmation Opportunity

Service Project Reflections are due Sunday, Dec. 6th and Sunday, March 21st
Interviews
Each candidate will have one individual interview toward the end of the
preparation (March or April). Appointments can be made with the High School
Youth Minister, Phil Arellano
or with the Small Group Leader, by candidate only.
Confirmation Preparation Connections
The LIFELINE
Connection
It is exciting to have
teenagers preparing for this awesome Sacrament through LIFELINE Ministry.
Please note: When there are no Confirmation Preparation Small Groups, confirmation candidates are encouraged to attend the High School LIFE! Night
program.
FAMILY
& PARISH INVOLVEMENT
First and foremost, the Parish Community must
extend a WELCOME to the young people preparing to celebrate Confirmation.
In addition, the Parish will be asked to commit to become partners in
PRAYER with our young people. Finally, the Parish Community is called to
WITNESS
to the faith it professes. Young people desperately need to SEE
faith lived out in the fully initiated community. Families are the domestic
church and need the bonding that only shared prayer and shared faith can bring
to them. Your family’s presence at Mass will make this happen.
