Rights and Responsibilities

Catholic tradition teaches that human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibilities are met.  Therefore, every person has a fundamental right to life and a right to those things required for human decency.  Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities -- to one another, to our families, and to the larger society.

Social Outreach opportunities

Kinship (www.kinship.org or 612-588-4655) helps children, ages 5-15, in need of additional support, realize their God given potential through adult friendships.  Kinship also provides a unique service opportunity for individuals, couples and families to put their faith into action on behalf of children.  The goal of these relationships is to provide children with trusting, positive adult role models.  These relationships, in turn, enhance the children's ability to overcome barriers to healthy development.  Studies show that mentoring reduces: Violent Behavior by 52%; School Drop Outs by 52%; Drug Abuse by 46%; and Teen Pregnancy by 35%.

ARC’S Value Village (http://www.arcgreatertwincities.org) ARC has many volunteer opportunities for small groups and individuals.  Arc offers one-time as well as on-going opportunities with flexible hours—days, evenings and weekends, 7 days a week!  Volunteers help unpack and sort donations such as clothing, accessories, household items, books, toys, jewelry, etc. and help prepare them for the sales floor.  Other volunteer projects include hang and tag clothing, price sticker hard goods and stock the merchandise on the sales floor.  Arc Value Village is located at the northwest corner of Winnetka & Medicine Lake Road (2751 Winnetka Ave).  Contact Molly Lindblad at (952) 915-3652 or mollylindblad@arcgreatertwincities.org to schedule a volunteer shift.

Affordable Housing

Homes within Reach (www.homeswithinreach.org) creates and preserves affordable home ownership in western suburban Hennepin County to low and moderate-income households.  HWR offers the opportunity for people to live in communities in which they work and or reside, creating stable communities and households, through the advantages of homeownership.  By preserving and recycling available resources, the program maximizes the public and private investment being made in workforce housing.  Close to home, a land trust home is being purchased in Maple Grove through the efforts of local parishes and community members.  To learn how this can also happen in the New Hope area, contact Jason in the Parish office.

Transportation

Transportation affects all within a community.  How we go to and from our places of work, community & school events and church has a great ripple effect.  This ripple also currently doesn’t offer many choices, beyond a personal car, for our area.  This greatly impacts those on the lower side of the economic scale.  Without a car, it often means fewer options for a higher paying job; needing a car forces one to spend more on transportation.  Below is an opportunity to work with local organizations (like ISAIAH), congregations, businesses and public officials in securing transit that benefit all within our area.  The Bottineau transit way is apart of larger metropolitan transit plan that will connect existing or to be built transit lines - Hiawatha, Central Corridor and Northstar.  To learn more, contact Jason in the Parish Office.

Public hearings on the Bottineau transit way (County Rd 81)

Two series of open house meetings are planned for the study to seek input from area residents, businesses and institutions. The first series were held in July of 2008 to gather input on corridor needs and the range of alternatives to be studied. The second series of open houses will present preliminary findings regarding the feasibility of the most promising alternatives for public input in the Spring of 2009. Meeting dates, times and locations will be posted on http://www.bottransit.org/schedule.htm as they become available.
