Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
|
Catholic teaching proclaims that a basic moral test is how our most vulnerable members are faring. In a society marred by deepening divisions between rich and poor, our tradition recalls the story of the Last Judgment (Mt 25) and instructs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first. |
As stated by Peruvian theologian Gustavo Gutierrez, “In English, the word (option) merely connotes a choice between two things. In Spanish, however, it evokes a sense of commitment (compromiso). The option for the poor is not optional, but it incumbent upon every Christian. It is not something that a Christian can either take or leave…the option for the poor is twofold: it involves standing in solidarity with the poor, but it also entails a stance against inhumane poverty.”

PRISM Food Shelf (www.prismmpls.com) and St. Joe’s has a long history, with PRISM’s founding roots beginning here over 30 years ago. St. Joe’s is a member of PRISM’s Faith Partner Board and contributes financially to PRISM each year as a part of the parish tithe. The parish holds a Food and Funds collection on the second Sunday of each month, a yearly collection of school supplies in August and winter coats during October and November. The St. Joe’s Reps organize a Sharing Tree during Advent that collects toys and gift certificates/cards for PRISM’s Holiday Shop. Volunteers from the parish assist clients at their food shelf, clothing store or Family Car Initiative. For more information about volunteer opportunities please contact Jessica Kelly at PRISM - (763) 529-1350 ext 109. PRISM is located at 730 Florida Ave S., Golden Valley. Food and Funds Collections are taken the weekend of the 2nd Sunday of each month. Nonperishable groceries are collected for PRISM’s food shelf. Money is also collected for PRISM and St. Joseph’s Emergency Funds program during offertory time. PRISM provides individualized support for addressing each family’s unique situation through their various programs – financial assistance, food shelf, clothing and household, school supplies, holiday and birthdays, employment & budget counseling and transportation. Families and individuals must live in Golden Valley; South of 42nd Avenue in Crystal, New Hope, or Robbinsdale; East of 494 in Plymouth. To learn more visit their website or call (763) 529-1350. PRISM Express offers affordable curb-to-curb rides to Golden Valley, Brooklyn Center, New Hope, Plymouth and Robbinsdale. PRISM is currently working with other transportation providers to expand service area so that it will include St. Louis Park. Riders must register before scheduling a ride. For more information call PRISM Express. Please call (763) 529-1252 to learn more. |

Home Free (www.homefreeprograms.org) Home Free is a shelter for women and their children in abusive relationships. Parishioners can donate their used cell phones to help support Home Free (this is one of their fundraisers). Phones can be dropped off at the Parish Center next to Room A or in the box in the Gathering Area. Collections for personal care and household items are also conducted by the St. Joe’s Reps. There is a drop of basket next to Room A at the Parish Center. This past June, children in the VBS week long program contributed items to this local organization. Items collected vary and are based on Home Free needs. To see the most current list of needs, please visit their website. |
