Lenten Renew

Each year for the past three decades, many parishioners have set aside some time to participate in a “Lenten Renewal”. People gather in small groups of about eight to twelve people to reflect on their faith, pray together, support one another on their faith journeys and to reach out in service. The topic for reflection has differed from year to year and has included focus on the Lenten Sunday Scripture Readings, what it means to be a Catholic, centering prayer and being peacemakers.

Lenten Renewal 2010: Following Christ: The Gospel According to Luke

Small groups of 10-12 people meet for six two-hour gatherings once a week.

The guide for our prayer and discussion is: “Following Christ: The Gospel According to Luke” which focuses on Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem, growing and learning on the journey of discipleship, parables of loss and forgiveness, the Last Supper, the denial, the Agony in the Garden, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection.

The outcome of our time of discussion and prayer will be excellent preparation for participating in Sunday Mass during lent, the Triduum and applying the Gospel to our life journeys.

Different groups meet on all seven days of the week. There are morning, afternoon and evening groups.

Outreach

This Lent, the Lenten Renewal groups and the parish at large were invited to participate in two special outreach efforts:

Kids Against Hunger – “New Hope for Haiti” – Lenten Renewal groups, families and the parish staff joined many others from the wider civic community with a goal of packing one million meals in nine days to go to the people of Haiti. We reached the goal! Thanks to all who helped.

“Shelter Boxes” – Another Lenten Renewal project is to ship a Shelter Box to Haiti. Lenten groups and other parishioners collected money in shoe boxes to contribute to the Shelter Box project. Each box costs $1,000.00 and contains a 10-person tent, thermal blankets, a water purification kit and jugs, a multi-fuel stove, cooking utensils, tools, mosquito nets and an activity kit for children. As of March 25, parishioners have contributed enough money to purchase on Shelter Box, and we are on our way to the second one. We’ll keep you posted!

Soup Supper

On March 18, we gathered for our traditional Soup Supper. Following the Supper, we gathered in the church for a Taize Prayer Service to celebrate the Feast of our patron, St. Joseph, whose feast is March 19.

Scripture Bible Study

Bible Studies are an excellent way to listen to God's word to us in our lives today. They also provide a way to better understand the cultural and historical background of the times when they were written and the various writing styles that were used.  For more information about upcoming bible studies, please check the parish bulletin or contact Anne Saevig at the parish center (763)544-3352 ext.113 or by email at asaevig@stjosephparish.com.

Celebrate Earth Day:  Caring for God’s Creation

Composting at St. Joseph’s – As you know in March of last year, the Parish Council decided we would begin composting all our organic waste (food, napkins, paper cups and plates, coffee grounds, plants and flowers). We used up our Styrofoam cups and replaced them with compostable cups and glasses. We changed from two trash pickups per week, to one trash and one compost pick up – better for the earth. Composting is also more economical for the parish: we pay less for the organics pickup than we do for trash pickup and we pay no solid waste management tax on the organics. Since then we have had parishioners and guests question us about “what goes where?” In an effort to answer that question, we will show a four minute DVD on composting provided by Hennepin County Environmental Services. The Composting DVD will be shown five minutes before Mass at all the weekend Masses on the weekend of April 17 and 18.

We have a “Green Corner” in the parish bulletin as space allows.  Click HERE for ways to make God's Creation greener.  When you have an ecology idea or website to share, please e-mail it to Anne Saevig: asaevig@stjosephparish.com.

Parish Produce Planters: Twenty four people signed up to plant and tend a container vegetable garden to be located on the balcony outside of Rooms B and C. We plan to grow produce for PRISM and share in some ourselves. If you would like to join the balcony garden team, please contact Anne Saevig at asaevig@stjosephparish.com or 763.544.3352, x113
